Congratulations to Drs. Debby Herbenick and Brian Dodge on Receiving SPHB Research and Teaching Awards, and CSHP Alumnus Omar Martinez on Selection for the Distinguished Alumni Award

Sunday, October 06, 2019

Drs. Herbenick and Dodge with the Department of Applied Health Sciences Chair and CSHP Core Faculty, Dr. Eric Walsh Buhi.

Drs. Debby Herbenick and Brian Dodge were recognized by the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington at the IU SPHB Awards Banquet on October 6, 2019. Dr. Dodge was awarded the 2019 Outstanding Senior Researcher Award and Dr. Herbenick was awarded the 2019 Trustees Teaching Award. Thrillingly, CSHP alumnus Omar Martinez, JD, MPH, MS, was also awarded one of the school's highest honors, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Martinez, now an NIH-funded tenured associate professor at Temple University College of Public Health, followed Dr. Dodge from the University of Florida to obtain his JD/MPH degrees (one of the first students to do so) and served as Dr. Dodge's Research Coordinator on an NICHD-funded R21 study of behaviorally bisexual men's health in Indianapolis. He also continued on in Dr. Dodge's footsteps as an NIMH-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the HIV Center for Clinical & Behavioral Studies at Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. We are most proud of our Cuban chutzpah who will always be part of our family - AZUCAR!

Omar Martinez and Brian Dodge continue their work together, which began in 2005 at the University of Florida when Dr. Dodge mentored Dr. Martinez as an undergraduate student program aimed at increasing participation of racial/ethnic minority students in medical and health professions.

Dr. Herbenick receives the 2019 Trustees Teaching Award.
